Ayyam Gallery Beirut is pleased to announce Drawings on Paper, the forthcoming solo show of Syrian painter Nihad Al Turk.Featuring a new body of work, the exhibition will highlight an essential component of Al Turk's artistic practice by examining his use of drawing as a formal device that gives volume and depth to expressionist figures and objects-subjects that appear to shift in place as masses trapped in disfigured shells.

Although widely known for allegorical paintings exploring a cast of monstrous, semi-autobiographical characters, Al Turk recently produced a series of large ink and acrylic drawings that chronicle the current conflict in Syria from it's early days as a popular uprising to it's current state as an all-consuming war.

Al Turk's new works follow a period of his art that restructured his compositions as he injected brilliant hues and minimised backgrounds with flat areas of colour.Inspired by his move from Damascus to Beirut after the outbreak of the war, the last series is ostensibly optimistic.
In contrast, his most recent drawings provide a somber account of displacement through a medium that allows for the laden inferences of markings. As the artist's lines seem to cut into the surface of the paper, an evident tension is created.

Ayyam Gallery is pleased to present Sand Rushes In, the forthcoming solo exhibition of United States-based, Palestinian-Iraqi artist Sama Alshaibi.Curated by Isabella Ellaheh Hughes, the exhibition will highlight Silsila (2009-present), an ongoing multimedia project by the artist that was shown as part of the Maldives Pavilion of the 2013 Venice Biennale.Alshaibi has recently created new works for the series, including video installations and large-scale photographs.Sand Rushes In will also mark the UK launch of the artist's eponymous monograph, which is edited by the curator and published by Aperture Foundation, New York.

Inspired by the nomadic traditions of Bedouins and the writings of fourteenth-century Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta, Silsila (Arabic for ‘chain’ or ‘link’) depicts the artist's journey through the significant desert areas and bodies of water that connect North Africa and West Asia to the Maldives, an island nation located in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Performing at various sites in North Africa and West Asia, Alshaibi has composed a body of work that describes the desert as a place of enduring paradox. As Alshaibi demonstrates with visual poetics and laden imagery, the desert can serve as the starting point for a broader cultural reading, revealing the mystical and historical importance of such environments, through which the region, even more broadly, the world, can re-imagine an uncertain ecological future.

Ayyam Gallery is pleased to announce Femafia, the solo exhibition of acclaimed Iranian artist Afshin Pirhashemi, who returns to Dubai with a new body of work.Pirhashemi's evident fascination with women, their struggles in hostile environments, and a resulting combative character, now expand to a wider scope of observation, tainted by the atmosphere that has been surrounding the artist for the past year.News, films, and women, among others, ignited a shifting outlook on the world that Pirhashemi has translated with his unmistakable style into photorealistic portraits defiantly laying on minimalist backgrounds.

While Pirhashemi's consummate brushwork remains a constant, his instantly recognisable monochromatisms seemingly dissolve, allowing colours to gain territory on his canvases.Following his UK show last year (Seduction, Ayyam Gallery London), in which two large-scale paintings introduced nude hues on the faces of his bold heroines, Pirhashemi’s thirst for pigments amplifies after years of colour abstinence.

Through carefully orchestrated depictions of his flamboyant characters, paired with strong, symbolic, and revealing titles, Pirhahsemi takes the viewer on a narrative road to an evolving psychic state that translates his oeuvre into one continuous series.

Ayyam Gallery Beirut is pleased to present Civilised Society, the solo show of Syrian painter Kais Salman.Debuting the artist's latest body of work, the exhibition will feature paintings that satirically explore the realm of politics in the Arab world through its various archetypes.Deconstructing the historical tradition of portraiture as a demonstration of power or social status, Salman scrutinises the public posturing of political figures-from armchair activists to international delegates.

At the same time, the new series demonstrates a shift in Salman's painting style as he employs a brilliant palette with a combination of expressionism and realism and introduces vividly described settings. These formal elements draw the viewer into each composition as mundane trappings surround monstrous figures. In The Anonymous Arab(2014), for example, a protagonist is enlivened by painterly brushmarks as he holds a meticulously rendered mask of the international hacktivist group.Outfitted in a tuxedo while lounging on an antique sofa, he is portrayed as a self-assured dandy experiencing a life of privilege.

The new, bilingual monograph on the artist will be available at the DIFC installment of the exhibition.Featuring a catalogue of reproductions spanning two decades of Takreti's oeuvre, the publication also includes essays by critic, editor, and novelist Pascal Amel and Ayyam Gallery artistic director and chief writer Maymanah Farhat.
